Morrissey kicks off 10-night Hollywood residency in style

Morrissey played the first of a 10-night stint at the Hollywood Palladium that will close down the legendary Los Angeles venue for extensive renovations.

Moz, who will perform nine more show at the Palladium running through next week, treated a crowd filled with adoring fans to songs that spanned his career.

In addition to playing classic Smiths tracks including 'How Soon Is Now' and 'Stretch Out And Wait', he previewed two new songs from his forthcoming album: 'That's How People Grow Up' and 'One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell', which featured a blaring trumpet section.

Throughout his 90-minute set, Morrissey handed his microphone to audience members, and at one point invited them to engage him in a question-and-answer session.

One fan asked the singer why he enjoyed playing for Southern California audiences so much, to which he responded, "Isn't it obvious?" He then played 'London' and added at the end of the song, "There's your answer."

Morrissey seemed to enjoy himself in the relaxed setting, and his all-male backing band adeptly kept the pace on The Smiths songs and Morrissey's solo material.

The crowd often sang along and waved lighters and mobile phones in the air, screaming loudly when Morrissey tore off his sweat-drenched shirt and threw it into the audience -- twice.

Morrissey and his band concluded the evening by emerging onto the stage wearing matching football uniforms for a one-song encore of 'Irish Blood, English Heart'.
Ian Curtis biopic wins prizes at Cannes Film Festival

The new Ian Curtis biopic 'Control' has won a host of acclaim and prizes at this year's Cannes Film Festival, including Best European Film.

Anton Corbijn's movie about the Joy Division singer, who committed suicide at the height of the band's powers in 1980, was shown outside the main Palme d'Or competition.

However, 'Control' was the big winner of the Director's Fortnight section, winning the CICAE Art & Essai prize for Best Film.

The movie also claimed the 'Regards Jeunes' award for best first or second directed feature film and the Europa Cinemas Label prize for Best European Film in the sidebar.

The Europa Cinemas jury said about the film: "This is a very impressive and assured debut from a renowned photographer, but he never allows the look of the film, beautiful though it is, to detract from the powerful story and character development.

"The performances are all excellent, not just the leading characters. We feel that this is a film that will strike a real chord with audiences around Europe, and not just with music lovers."

The movie is an adaptation of Curtis widow Deborah's memoirs of her life with the singer, 'Touching From A Distance'. In the movie, she is played by Oscar-nominated actress Samantha Morton, while Curtis is played by relative unknown Sam Riley.

'Control' is due for release later this year.
